Calculate Age Between Two Dates

An age is the time between a start date, usually a date of birth, and an end date. Changing the end date lets you see how old someone was at a past event, how old they will be on a future date, or how old someone was when they died. The same calculation measures any span, such as years of service or the time since an anniversary.

Methodology

Full calendar years are counted first, then full months, then the remaining days. If the start day does not exist in a month, such as the 31st, the last day of that month is used. Total days are counted separately, so leap years are included. The end date is not counted as a full day.

Time between = end date − start date

Worked example

Start date: 14 March 1985
End date: 2 September 2023

14 Mar 1985 → 14 Mar 2023 = 38 years
14 Mar 2023 → 14 Aug 2023 = 5 months
14 Aug 2023 → 2 Sep 2023 = 19 days

Time between = 38 years, 5 months, 19 days = 14,051 total days (2,007 weeks and 2 days).

Age at death or at a past event

To find age at death, enter the date of birth as the start date and the date of death as the end date. For example, born 3 June 1920 and died 21 November 1989 gives 69 years, 5 months and 18 days, or 25,373 days. The same method works for age at marriage, graduation, an exam or any other dated event.

Age between two dates vs age difference

The age difference calculator compares two birth dates and tells you who is older. This calculator measures the time from one date to a later date. Use it when you know the date of an event and want the age or the elapsed time on that date.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the age between two dates?

Enter a start date, such as a date of birth, and an end date. The calculator counts full calendar years, then full months and remaining days, and also shows total months, weeks and days between the two dates.

Can I use it to find age at death?

Yes. Enter the date of birth as the start date and the date of death as the end date. The result is the age at death in years, months and days, plus the total days lived.

Does the calculation include the end date?

No. It measures the time from the start date up to the end date, so the end date itself is not counted as a full day. Add one day to the total if you want both the first and last day included.

How are leap years and month lengths handled?

The calculation uses real calendar dates. Full years are counted first, then months and remaining days; when the start day is missing from a month, that month’s last day is used. Total days include 29 February where it falls in the range.

What if the end date is before the start date?

The calculator needs an end date on or after the start date. To compare two birth dates in either order, use the age difference calculator.

Is this the same as the age difference calculator?

Not quite. The age difference calculator compares two birth dates and tells you who is older. This calculator measures the time from any start date to any later date, such as from birth to an event.

Are the dates stored?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and the dates are not uploaded or saved by this website.
